Oil Spill Dispersant

Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) is a chemical agent sprayed onto residual oil spills (typically after the skimming process) using a spray gun. The dispersant works by breaking down, clumping, or localizing the oil so that it can biodegrade more rapidly, thereby minimizing or eliminating its pollutant effects.

There are several types of oil spill dispersants based on their working mechanisms:

  • Collector-Type OSD: This type of dispersant gathers or localizes the oil to prevent further spreading, making it easier to remove or extract the collected oil.

  • Dispersing-Type OSD: This type breaks the oil into very fine particles, which then disperse with the help of ocean currents. The smaller particle size reduces the overall concentration of oil in the water.

  • Coagulating-Type OSD: This dispersant causes the oil to clump together into larger particles. Once the particles reach a certain size, they naturally sink, facilitating easier removal or natural breakdown.
