Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

Dissolved Air Flotation, commonly abbreviated as DAF, is a method used to separate pollutants such as Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD₅), and oils and greases from water by utilizing fine air bubbles. This technique is particularly effective for removing small-diameter particles, such as dispersed oil droplets in water, which cannot be efficiently separated by gravity alone due to their small size. These dispersed particles would require an impractically long time to rise to the surface without assistance.

The DAF process works by introducing pressurized wastewater into an environment at atmospheric pressure, causing the release of dissolved gases. The interaction between fine gas bubbles and suspended solids or oil droplets reduces the overall specific gravity of the particles, thereby enhancing their buoyancy and facilitating their separation from the water.

A typical Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system consists of several components, including a pump, water tank, air-water mixing tank (saturation tank), air supply piping, water distribution piping, inlet channels, compressor, effluent discharge channels, sludge discharge lines, an air flow control panel, and other supporting equipment.

Three (3) common design configurations for flotation systems are:
  1. DAF with full‑ or partial‑influent pressurization

  2. DAF with pressurized recycle flow
  3. Induced Air Flotation (IAF)
